Burke Prize 2021: Story Makers

The Burke Prize is a $50,000 unrestricted award from the Museum of Arts and Design for US-based artists aged 45 or under working in glass, fiber, clay, metal or wood. Story Makers, the 2021 edition, was an AR-based special project on the museum’s official site presenting fifteen finalists — built on the idea that storytelling and empathetic expression matter more than ever.

Augmented reality

I scanned museum pieces and built the ability to place them in AR, so visitors could stand a ceramic vessel or a sculpture in their own room straight from the page — the exhibition reaching people who could not travel to it.

Handwriting that writes itself

The page is annotated in handwriting that draws on as you scroll, built with SVG stroke animation so the marks appear to be written in real time rather than faded in. Around it sit complex sequenced animations tying the type, the dot grid and the artist profiles into one continuous scroll performance.
